John Ross

As a Chief he fought for the to prevent the Cherokee from being expelled from their land. Sadly he was unsuccessful, and they were forced onto the Trail of Tears.

They were the supporters of Ross who challenged the legitimacy of the Treaty of New Echota. The treaty had not been ratified by any person who held power in the tribe, yet it ceded tribal land and resulted in the Cherokee being pushed west on the Trail of Tears under the Indian Removal Act.

Advocacy

Ross and the National Party organized against the removal and petitioned people of power within the U.S. government. They organized gatherings to promote the cause, and gain supporters.

The leadership of the Cherokee Nation took action and organized supporters to resist fraudulent treaties and forced relocation.
